Hello, 2014

the fearless brood

Are you sick of all the year end summaries yet? I’ve been avoiding writing one up because Real Life Stuff kept me so busy in 2013 that I didn’t really feel like my sewing had much of a chance to grow. Really, I am more than okay with that. There is a season for everything. However, if I do take the time to look it over, 2013 still had some pretty fantabulous moments blog/sewing-wise.

The beginning of the year I was settling into my sewing room and preparing for my fifth child. I released the Mommy Poppins bag pattern and went to Sewing Summit in the fall. I started two quilts and finished neither of them.  I experimented with leather and made a rad slipcover.

What I wasn’t doing much of was sewing clothes for myself. I want to pick up where I left off in 2010 when pregnancy shifted the direction of my garment-a-month sewing plans.

No more excuses! The time has come to sew myself some pants (or trousers rather, for you UK sewists. Although making myself some lacy knickers sounds fun too.) So this is my public declaration…..

I refuse to be a scared pantless any longer. I will sew myself one pair of pants a month in 2014.

What about you? Do you want to make some pants?

Woah! Impressive!! Both what you accomplished in 2013 – sewing wise and real life wise- and the pants thing! Looking forward to following the journey- although I have some more house projects to finish before I can consider sewing pants 😉

Pants seem like one of the most difficult thinks to sew! I can’t wait to see what you sew!!

It does have a rather bad reputation, but we shall see if it lives up to it?

My goal is to finally sew with knit. I’ve been scared to, but found some knits I really like and want to make a shirt or cardigan for me and possibly some for my daughter. I would love to learn to sew pants, but I need them for teenage boys who are almost impossible to find pants for and I don’t think they would like most materials other than denim and not so sure I want to go there either. :) If they would stop growing taller without growing out, it might make my life easier.

teenagers! oh boy. That is a bridge I haven’t crossed yet.

Love the photo… and what you’ve made in one year is pretty impressive.
I kind of want to sew some trousers for the challenge of it… but I and my daughters don’t wear them (only skirts), and my husband wears a work uniform almost all of the time. Maybe I’ll try making some for one of my relatives. =)

      Pajama pants perhaps?

Given that I was forced to spend the day in pajama pants, because I had no dry pants, I’m guessing that yes, yes I do want to make some pants.

Your achievements of last year are quite impressive. This year should be amazing! 😉

That’s an ambitious undertaking–I can’t wait to see what you come up with (and what kind of good tips you’ll have)!

I’m afraid I won’t be joining you on the pants thing. I don’t own one pair. In high school I wore jeans some but even then I was more comfortable in dresses and skirts. I also don’t wear any skirt that is three inches above my ankle. My husband says that I was born at the wrong period of time. I have very long hair but it is always up in a bun. When our grandchildren spend the night they are always taken back by how long grandmama’s braid is. These are just my preferences.

to each her own. Do you have any goals for stretching your sewing skills for 2014?
