I am so happy with how this project turned out. Simplicity 2603 caught my eye when Stitchywitch posted her version in September. I thought it would transition nicely between pregnancy and postpartum.
This wrap cardigan pattern is based on the DKNY Cozy which can be worn in a multitude of ways. My version is rayon-spandex jersey bought at Joann’s (where else?).
I made some changes to the original pattern. I made “view A”, but extended the sleeves 6 inches. DKNY’s Cozy has a generously long sleeves, and I didn’t like the cuffs on Simplicity’s view B. I also left off the elastic gathering at the neckline. It seemed like it would bulk up this incredibly lightweight fabric. Many versions posted to Sewing Pattern Review left off hemming the edges. In theory, the knit will not unravel, but I was worried it would wear out with all the stretching and tying. Fortunately, I found a hemming solution in my son’s crayon box.
It held the hem in place better than pins did and it still allowed it to stretch after being sewn. It also went through the wash without any problem. Is there a sewing tool already available that does this? I have yet to hear of one.
I’ve discovered that sling rings make for excellent Cozy “bangles”, and I modified the no-sew ring sling technique to tie my cardigan. It is a classy alternative to a knot.
Exciting Things About This Project
- A new technique for hemming knits!
- More practice with knits. I’m really starting to get a feel for it.
- It is nice when a handmade clothing item is cheaper than the store-bought version. This is not alway the case.
- Feeling totally sophisticated draped in yards of fabric. 🙂
Gah! Amazing. I’m completely in awe 🙂 You look fabulous, dahling! Great tip with the glue stick for a hemming aid… I never would have though about that and it really looks like it turned out perfect. Thanks for sharing your abundance of talent with us 🙂 You are Proverbs 31 personified…
Thank you for that beautiful complement.
Hey. I looked at the notions section at Joann’s today. It turns out they have a Dritz “fabric glue stick” for “temporarily holding and basting fabrics”. It states that it is water soluable. It doesn’t seem to be any different than Elmer’s and it costs $3.50 a stick. I think I’ll stick with my Elmer’s.
you are even prettier than your shawl cozy, and thanks to you we are baking bread also.
I’m glad you are baking bread, Mom. 🙂
AMAZING. YOU are beautiful, absolutely beautiful. And your sewing amazes and inspires me. Awesome new sweater. Especially like the sling ring knot touch, looks so in, so classy. And I love the baby-bump.
I’m blessed to have a photographer husband. (and I’m pretty psyched to have a decent bump now too! 🙂 )
Great job! It looks fab on you! Such a gorgeous pregnant momma 🙂
Thank you for stopping by. 🙂
Wow! Gorgeous! I love the ring sling idea. Very sophisticated. 🙂 You look radiant, by the way. 🙂
I think I need one of these to hide my post baby belly. Love the babe, not crazy about the toll on my body! I love how this wraps above the belly. Great for mopping the floor. Now that would be a picture!
