As much as I love the pictures of beautiful sewing and craft rooms all over the internet, it really doesn’t fit in my life right now. Sewing happens when I can do it along side my children playing, or nearby my husband relaxing in the evening. (Extrovert, much?) During months and months of denial, piles of fabric and pattern pieces kept appearing on my writing desk in the living room, and I kept finding myself hauling my sewing machine up and down the stairs from my crafting space in the basement. Last weekend my husband and I worked on rearranging our living room to better fit how we actually use it (a la The House that Cleans Itself). In a moment of inspiration, my husband moved my desk over to the window and declared it my sewing desk.
I LOVE it. I love the sun shining in on the desk. I love that I can just tuck my sewing machine underneath it when I am not using it. I love that I have a pretty cardboard storage box (from Ikea) full of my current crafting bits and pieces stored close by. Maybe someday, we will finish our basement (or, even better, move to a bigger house), and I will enjoy having a dedicated crafting space again. But in the meantime, I am happy my sewing machine has a place in the heart of my home, the living room. 🙂
