Bundles for Babies: Ring Slings

February 12, 2011 by Jodi 7 Comments

Another one of my go-to baby shower presents is a unpadded ring sling. I LOVE baby carriers. My husband thinks I’m crazy for having so many different kinds, but they are the tools of my trade.  I have made two of these slings for myself, two for my sisters who are now mothers, and now another for a cousin who will be welcoming her first child in just a month.  It is not a difficult project – just a long hemmed rectangle attached to a pair of rings, but it is the most useful gift you could give a mother (especially if she has more than one child!).

I make them out of cotton stretch sateen. It is a “bottom weight” and therefore strong enough to hold even a toddler, but still cool for summer months.  There is a slight width-wise stretch which makes it all the more comfy for mom and baby.  The rings are purchased from SlingRings.com and Jan Andrea’s instructions for a pleated shoulder are so comfortable that I have never missed having padding.

Here is my “baby” sister, now a mother herself, snuggling my nephew in the sling I made her.  Isn’t she beautiful?

Yay! I have material and rings to make one, but the pleated shoulder was totally intimidating me 🙂 Problem solved! How exciting and well timed, Jodi 🙂 Your slings are beautiful! Love the satin stitch detail on the hem (and that rockin’ yellow chair!). As always, I’m so impressed!
