Project 12: Update

March 21, 2010 by Jodi 10 Comments

I think I’m going to call this one a failed project. At least for now.   I removed the lining and took out 12 total inches from the waist.  The results are still far from flattering.  The picture makes it look halfway decent, but I couldn’t bring myself to post the full body shot.

So I’m not sure if this counts for my March project or not.  I might pull out my “Spring Top Week” pattern early and try to make it in the next couple of days.

To quote my husband’s comment:
If you want to improve your rate of success, double your failure rate.

Well, I’m definitely working on the failure part…

You took 12 inches from the waistband AND the width of the skirt? Or just from the waistband? I think this skirt would be adorable with a touch more fullness, and a hemline above the knee. Or skip the fullness; trim the skirt so it has an above-the-knee length, and use the trimmed-off fabric to make a long waist sash. Just thinking out loud….

Just the waistband. I think I will set it aside for a few weeks and look at it after I’ve had a break from it.

More fullness at the bottom might help. Like a crinoline type dealie? This is entering into a realm of retro attire that I have NO experience with.

Thanks for the thinking out loud. Any support in this crazy sewing endeavor is greatly appreciated.

I know how it is to just need a break from a project. Last comment and I will drop it till you post about this again. 🙂 I meant more fullness in the skirt, just under the waistband. Like, it’s gathered right now, and I think it would be even cuter with just a little more fabric being gathered. Another potential option (maybe?) is to cut the length of the skirt in half, and double the width of the skirt. Well, maybe that would be overkill in the gathering. But that would give you more fabric if you need it.

Honestly, I wonder if it’s just the length that’s throwing you. The current fullness doesn’t look bad at all — I’m thinking a shorter length would help heaps. And I’m done till you want to talk about it again. Ha!

I am not even close to understanding retro attire however this skirt reminds me of some I’ve seen were the skirt sits higher up at the actual waist, and is about knee length. Maybe try that in the mirror and see what it does.
You’re right, the picture doesn’t make it look bad. It just seems kind of plain in the picture.

Something like this, but maybe not a mini skirt! But see how the waistline is?

Now I join Antoinette in not mentioning it again until you do.. 🙂

Would you wear the shirt tucked in with the waist higher? Forgive my total fashion ineptitude?

Your suggestions are giving me hope to look at this again.

(I should of made you look at when you were here yesterday. oh well.)
