Does this mean my hobby has a hobby?

October 19, 2011 by Jodi 28 Comments

I caved. The lure of luxurious comfort in the form of cowls did me in. I bought some yarn and some needles and I am joining a knit along. Hopefully by Nov 9th, I’ll have a snuggly warm Gap-tastic Cowl to sport around the playground.

Don’t worry. Sewing is still number one in my heart. Look, I’m even making progress on Duncan’s quilt! And I’ll have plenty of nifty tricks on how to piece curves by the time I’m done with it.

So, ‘fess up. Who else here is a knitter? (Or crocheter for that matter?)

I’m a knitter, and a spinner, and a weaver. Oh, and a rug braider.

You know I am. And I totally support this move. Of course, you also know I’m one of the biggest enabler in the world. Enjoy your knitting!

I find knitting much more relaxing than sewing so I’m interested to see how you like it. Have you knitted much before?? I am working on a cowl scarf right now too, but it’s not the double loop kind. I’m not actually following a pattern…mainly just have my fingers crossed that it doesn’t become a woolen neck brace 🙂

Cowls seem pretty straightforward. What’s the worse that can happen, you have to pull it apart and try again right?

I’m a crocheter at the moment, very little sewing (but I’m working on that!). I’m currently working on an afghan for me and my husband in our favorite college team’s colors.

A crochet girl all the way here, although I would love to be able to knit better. Just not enough time in the day for so many crafts is there? Lucy

I think the lack of time is why I am worried about attempting a new hobby. 🙂

Altho’ sewing is my gift from God I love to knit & crochet too. It’s something I can do in the evening or traveling. After the cowl try a simple baby afghan. They’re small so you don’t have to dedicate a lifetime to them. Good luck & have fun!

I made a baby blanket while pregnant for my first born son. I used thin yarn and it took forever. It kind of turned me off knitting for a good long while.

Well, I learned to crochet when I was nine years old, and my mom helped me to make myself two bathing suits for the summer I was ten or eleven. Funny, as I am nearing red hat age, I am still a newbie at sewing! I also make jewelry and rosaries. About five years ago I started Scrapbooking, and since this summer, I have dabbled (pun intended) in painting. I think it is safe to say…my hobbies have hobbies!

It is so wonderful that you continue to learn new things even into “red hat age”. 🙂 Rock on!

Oh! One day I will be brave enough to learn to knit! I have the desire, just not the know-how. I am afraid that I will have trouble since I am math challenged. 🙂

I have too many nightmares of dropped stitches and uneven tension when I tried knitting as a teenager, so crochet is my yarn craft. So much easier to go back when I stuff something up. I find crochet is good for unwinding or mindless craft time, whereas I need to concentrate and be on the ball when I sew. It’s nice to have crafty options, depending on my mood.

I hear that a lot – “It is easier to fix mistakes while crocheting.”

I started out crocheting, then knitting then sewing. Hopefully I will add quilting sometime in the future.

I was a quilting monogamist once, but then knitting snuck in some years ago, and once the door was open, crochet followed. The all make different things and textures, and are good for doing in different moods…

I’m a crocheter and knitter as well. I love doing it when I’m watching TV, so I don’t feel like I’m just sitting on my butt doing nothing! Something about cool weather makes me want to knit cozy scarves. Can’t wait to see the finished project!

BTW, if your new hobby takes off, check out http://www.ravelry.com/ ….. pure addicting!
