Introducing The Mic Drop Tote!

August 25, 2016 by Jodi 4 Comments

It’s here! The Mic Drop Tote pattern is here! Let me introduce you, and share with you a coupon code in honor of its release.

denim with piping

My goal when designing this pattern was to create a beginner-friendly sewing pattern that was still fun for the experienced sewist. I wanted a simple shape and construction without compromising on style. Based on the feedback my wonderful testers have given me, I have accomplished my goal!

The Mic Drop Tote has just the right amount of interlining to maintain shape without losing the cozy slouchy look of a hobo-style bag.

Let’s talk about a minute about the handle!

Mic Drop Tote

Unlike most bag patterns, the handle strap is integrated into the side panel of the bag. Special finishing methods are required when handles are attached this way, and two options are given in this pattern. The first is straight-forward and beginner friendly, but the second, geared towards intermediate sewists, is a magical technique borrowed from the garment sewing world. You will laugh with delight when you see how it works. I know I did. (Check out the video tutorial for the advanced technique!)

Speaking of adventurous, the integrated handle is also a great opportunity for playing with fun trim! Directions for how to apply trim are included in the pattern.

amazing piping on the Mic Drop Tote

mmm… That piping makes my heart beat faster.

standard length strap is designed with snug fit under arm

The Mic Drop Tote is designed to be carried snugly under the arm, but I have also included an extended length for those that want it to drop farther from the shoulder.

While only two strap lengths are given in the pattern, the strap could easily be extended to any length desired.

extended length vs standard length handle

This bag hits the sweet spot for large tote bag without being overwhelming. My testers were happily surprised to find how much it could hold.

It has a gorgeous zippered interior pocket for your cellphone or personal items.

room for everything

Not to mention, I can easily pack mine with a knitting project, a large water bottle, wallet, and iPad, and its wide strap keeps the load comfortable on my shoulder.

room for everything

Wow the ninja method is a challenge! I’m determined to get it right watching the tutorial over and over. Of course at first I basted the bag parts together thinking I could just pull it through itself from the opening in the bottom.Nope! Love the design. It will be fun to kantha stitch the whole bag. -Jules

It’s an interesting structural construction problem isn’t it? Once you get it once though, it becomes a whole lot more clear. I look forward to seeing your bag!
